How to Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

We are creatures of habit and there is comfort in the known.  We feel safe when we’re hiding in our comfort zone and to move away from it is scary.  Whilst we may logically want to thrive, is being stuck in your comfort zone stopping you from acting?

Unfortunately, this was a lesson I learned rather late in life and a reason why I re-trained as a practitioner.

My inner ‘Captain Sensible’ likes to feel safe and secure so I spent far too long stuck in my comfort zone.  This was evident in my spending 20+ years with the same company, staying in relationships way too long and not moving on from my first home for 13 years.

When life threw me a number of challenges, I was forced from my comfort zone.  I soon found out; that things weren’t as bad as I’d feared.  It was the stories I’d told myself that kept me stuck and although uncomfortable at first, once I addressed the mindset work, things got easier.

Staying the same is not an option when everything in the world moves towards change.  Change is the one thing in life that is guaranteed.

What’s your comfort zone?

It’s a safe place where you do what you know, and you know what to expect.  You may have the skills as a practitioner and do amazing work with your clients, but you still aren’t thriving.  Whilst you know logically what you can achieve, for some reason you stay stuck.  You question your ability to thrive and build a business that will support your life.

Do the mindset work

Become aware of what is happening when you start to move outside your comfort zone.  What are the stories you tell yourself?  Are they useful to you or are they sabotaging you? Most of these will be coming from a place of fear so address them using your favourite techniques.

Think about what has worked for you in the past and how you can apply this learning to the new situation.  Know once you get used to the new ‘thing’, you’ll wonder why you were ever phased by it in the first place.

Remind yourself of times you succeeded in something that at first scared you.  Use these to reinforce your decision to step out of your comfort zone.

Acceptance

Recognise that everything will not work out as planned and that’s okay.  Use these times as examples to learn from and put them down to experience rather than trying to control everything.

Small steps

When you’re heading into new territory, things can seem scary.  The hardest part of moving out of your comfort zone is taking the first step into the unknown.  Once you start moving, you will build some momentum which will help you to keep going.  But you must get started.

Take regular, consistent action

Once you address your mindset, make sure you take regular consistent action.  Action is the only way you will learn and move on from your comfort zone.

Work out what you want to achieve and create a plan of action and break it down into small, manageable steps.   This will stop it from seeming like such a big barrier to entering your new zone of growth.  Remember to celebrate each step as you go, and you’ll soon be making progress.

If you have a business buddy, mastermind group or coach, let them know what you are working on so they can support you and keep you accountable.

Comfort zones change as you grow and every time you are pushed outside one, it will cause a reaction.  We are all works in progress and working on your mindset and taking action are ongoing challenges.  They are absolutely worth the effort if you want to achieve your potential.
