How to Build a Thriving Mindset for Success
May 29, 2025
Your mindset reflects how you experience the world. It's based on a collection of thoughts and beliefs that help you navigate your reality. These thoughts influence everything from your attitude to the choices you make. They shape how you interpret life, respond to situations, and form the habits you build.
Simply put, your mindset shapes your thoughts, which influence your feelings and are reflected in your behaviours.
Mindset is key to thriving as a practitioner, and it can easily mislead you and keep you playing small, but the great news is, your mindset can be changed and developed.
What Stories are you Telling Yourself?
We all tell ourselves stories. Some lift us up, others hold us back. The stories you tell yourself offer a glimpse into your mindset.
If you’re feeling stuck in your business, take a moment to notice the stories you’re telling yourself.
You may notice your thoughts circling around the issue in a discouraging or limiting way. Often, we default to unhelpful stories that mask limiting beliefs.
The more often you repeat these stories, the more your mind accepts them as facts.
You start to unconsciously seek evidence that confirms them, and, unsurprisingly, you’ll find it.
For example:
If you don’t believe you can be successful, you’ll begin to notice all the areas in life where you feel you’re not measuring up: your business, your finances, your health, even your wardrobe. You’ll compare yourself to others, assume they’re doing better, and reinforce the belief that success is out of your reach.
Identify the Story
We constantly talk to ourselves, and many of the stories are habitual or designed to keep us safe from the things we fear. These stories tend to justify why you feel stuck, even if they’re no longer true.
Start by working out exactly what the story is you’re repeating. You may find you’ve been telling yourself the story for so long you don’t even recognise it as a story anymore.
These stories will show up in your thoughts, justifying your circumstances and reinforcing your reasons for staying stuck. If they are limiting, destructive, or negative, they need to be addressed.
Decide whether the story still serves you. If not, it’s time to let go and start writing a new one.
Decide on Your New Story
Rather than allowing the old story to determine your future, what would your future self want you to believe? How can you change your story to make it empowering? What needs to appear in your new story to help you create a thriving business?
In the previous example, you may decide your new story is “I am deserving and capable of being successful. I am willing to do the work necessary and trust myself to earn a comfortable living doing the work I love.”
Make sure the new story is created using positive language so you’re giving your brain absolute direction for where you want to go.
Supporting Your New Story
It will take conscious effort and repetition to embed the new story until it becomes second nature.
Affirm your new story to yourself regularly, and make it part of your daily routine to tell yourself your new story. Actively look for evidence to support your new story and celebrate anything that you achieve, which takes you a step closer.
Anytime you hear yourself repeating your old story, literally tell yourself to “stop” and replace it with your new one. Your brain is used to running the old story, so it needs to be reminded until it starts to automatically tell you the new one
Visualise your ideal day - what you're doing, how you're making a difference, and how good that feels. This will help ground your new belief and support a thriving mindset.
If you have a preferred personal development technique, such as EFT, NLP, or journaling, use it to help you create a thriving mindset. Remember we’re human and we’re all a work in progress - be kind to yourself. But keep reinforcing your new story with small, aligned actions.
Your new story may not bring an abundance overnight, but new opportunities will start to present themselves. Take a step towards it each day, and before you know it, the new story will soon become your new reality. What are you going to do today to act on your new story?
Final Thoughts
If you’re struggling with a thriving mindset, surround yourself with a great support network. One of the most powerful supports I’ve experienced personally has been working with a mentor to support and guide me to navigate the challenges we all face as small business owners.
