A Simple Routine Will Set You Free

I’ve noticed when I start my workday with no agenda, I don’t achieve much. I may have a clear day to get lots done, but I end up drifting. Before I know it, it’s the end of the day and I feel like I’ve achieved nothing!

Whilst I may have all good intentions of having a productive day, no structure means it’s easy to get side-tracked by chores, social media, or other forms of procrastination.

I do enjoy pottering at the weekend and seeing where time takes me, but it’s not a good approach for my workday.

I’ve found by adding structure into my day in the form of simple routines, it’s freeing, and gives me the space to flow through my work.

Structure to flow

Imagine a river – it needs the structure of the banks to allow it to flow. Without them, it would disperse and it wouldn’t exist as a river anymore.

Your day's like this, and having the structure of a simple routine in place will help you to flow.

How much structure and routine you put into your day is personal to you. It should work to enhance your day and take away unnecessary decisions and overthinking, but not stifle you.

Having a routine will also help you set good boundaries, so you protect your work day and home life from interruptions.

Creating your routine

Set your days and times for work and communicate it to clients so they know when you’re available, and when you’re not. Also, let family and friends know this so they know when you’re working and so as not to disturb you.

Block out time in your diary to make sure you have space and time for important things, like lunch breaks, working on your business - your accounts, marketing, or the exciting new project you’ve been wanting to do for ages.

Plan out your day in advance so you know exactly what you’re doing at the start. Either do this as you go, or my personal favourite is to work out the week ahead. This way I get to see where there are quieter times and where I'm being over-ambitious and be flexible around them.

Incorporate little daily routines that become habits that nourish you. By this, I mean looking at your day and identifying little pockets of time just for you, that meet your own needs. I have a morning routine which I’ve done for years. It enables me to do all my personal development first thing and then straight after, I’m out with the dogs to get fresh air and a nature fix before getting on with my day.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” Aristotle

If you’re feeling like you’re constantly jumping from one thing to another and getting frustrated at your lack of progress - look at your routine.

A simple routine will help you achieve more, stress less and give you the freedom to flow inside and outside of your business.
