Dealing with Your Resistance to Marketing

You know how it feels, you do some marketing for your practice and start to progress, and then comes the resistance.  You know logically that you want to build a thriving practice and that it really matters.  But, it can feel like an uphill battle at times!

Marketing your services and building a successful business creates change.  Change is the one thing in life that is guaranteed, so why is it, we often fight to stay the same?  The fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of success, fear of any kind will make the journey through change more challenging and cause resistance.

Recognise and address fears and concerns

Resistance is just your subconscious way of trying to keep you safe and protected.  Our brains are wired to anticipate anything that may be uncomfortable and move us away from it.  Anything that pushes you outside of your comfort zone, will trigger fear and resistance.

By accepting the situation is just your brain trying to keep you comfortable and safe, you can address the resistance that is occurring.

Write down any fears that come up as will help stop them from whirling around in your head.  Seeing the them written down in black and white can be really freeing, especially when you realise exactly what it is that is keeping you stuck.  It is a great way to gain perspective.

Use whatever technique works for you whether that’s journaling, talking to a friend or meditating.  Do what will help you to let go of the fear, and return to feeling calm again.

Recognise your achievements

Allow yourself time to identify and celebrate your achievements.  Write them down, or create a notice board (or Pinterest board) full of pictures to remind you and reinforce what you have done, and how far you have come.

Practicing gratitude is another great way to help keep your focus on the good things in life.  There are many ways to do this from simply thinking about things that you are grateful for when in the shower, to writing about them in your diary or journal.

What do you want?

Use this question to get clarity over what you want to achieve, and how you want to feel.  Be very descriptive and answer using positive language, avoid saying “I don’t want x, y, z”!  Create a metaphor (like a who or what) which represents what you want.  For example, I want to confidently share and be rewarded for my knowledge and experience like a shining star.  This will give your brain absolute direction about where you want and an image of what represents that to you.

This is another place a notice board (or Pinterest board) can be really useful.  By creating a vision board, or  a collection of pictures that illustrate what you want to achieve will help you keep moving towards it.

Plan of action

Take your goal of what you want to achieve and break it down into small, manageable steps.  You’re creating a road map of how you are going to achieve your goal.  Then commit to taking action.  Book time in your schedule for when you are going to do each step and start today!
